Client Portraits I've Done from Over the Years

More times than I can I remember clients will approach me with their heart set on getting a family members portrait from a wallet size picture in poor condition. I definitely understand that one picture maybe the most personal and only image of how they remember their cherished loved one. I hold the highest compassion for this and I often desire wanting to be the artist to take on the job. I’ve had my fair share of poor quality photos to work off of and made informed decisions based on my confidence in being able to execute a beautiful piece. Yet, a small, poor quality photo or the both will no doubt create difficulty and challenges for the artist. If the picture you want the artist to reference will not work, please understand it will never be worth the risk to jeopardize the client from receiving a quality portrait. Your best bet is to provide photo references that are large and a couple of options so in cases where one doesn’t work you’ll already have a backup option that might. Once a photo has been decided on or one has been mutually agreed upon to use, the next step is choosing where the portrait should go. You shouldn’t just stick a portrait anywhere on the body. Don’t get me wrong, if your pretty firm on a non-recommended area of where you want the portrait to be placed, I may still fulfill your hearts desires. Note, this won’t come without hesitation, and strongly encouraging you with numerous reasons why you should reconsider. Certain areas of the body create movement that will affect the look and feel of the portrait. There’s also folds or creasing of skin that can alter how the portrait looks so check yourself out in the mirror a few times study a bit the area your considering so you are solid on placement. Come appointment time be ready for a long session. Portraits aren’t typically banged out quick. At times you could end up zoning out to the sound of tattoo machine for up to 6-8hrs. This all depends on the complexity of the photo, your reaction to dis-comfort (movement or twitching will always slow down your session), and the number of breaks taken. Ready yourself mentally for the long haul and rest assured your under the care of hands capable of accomplishing a portrait that will surpass your expectations!
